DID THESE ROYAL WEDDINGS HAVE HOSTS TO KEEP GUESTS ENTERTAINED?

FEATURED IN THE TELEGRAPH

Paid hosts are also expected to look the part. “If there's a theme to the party, they could be dressed to the nines in high fashion or couture. They could be styled by a designer or there could be a sponsor for the event,” says Weitzkorn. The person holding the party usually determines how strict the style criteria for hosts is. “Some of the hosts will have their own wardrobe that they've acquired over the years, other bits they'll buy bespoke to the event or the client will get them [clothes] depending on the event.”

It’s unclear how many paid hosts worked at Beatrice’s wedding, but according to Johnny Roxburgh, a highly-sought after event planner with a roster of famous clients including The Queen, Prince William and Sting, hosts wouldn’t be included in wedding guest numbers under pandemic regulations; they are workers. Yet he was surprised to hear that a royal event would have outsourced party hosts, adding that he wouldn’t hire any for a royal celebration he was organising.

“In the UK, [royals] usually have someone who is part of the palace team, whose job it would be to do that. But, maybe in some other [countries] where they don’t have such a big core team they might employ people who are there to look after guests.”

Roxburgh believes that at both Princess Beatrice’s and Princess Eugenie’s weddings, most people would have had friends or family members there that they knew well, although he can understand why they may have still used hosts. “The bride and groom are never in a position to [take people to the bar for a drink or make sure people are mingling] so they do need somebody to look after guests.”
